Motor Car Racing Satisfies the Need for Speed
By Toby Trumbill One of the most celebrated spectator sports in the world, Auto racing provides race car drivers and fans alike the irresistible thrill of speed. This sport combines the excitement of watching cars blazing through at break neck speeds, with the tantalizing element of danger.
Auto racing takes many forms, and is held on a variety of tracks, roads, and circuits. The goal, however is all the same; get from point A to point B in the fastest time possible.
Some of the most popular forms of car racing are:
- Open Wheel Racing
Open wheel cars are specially built for racing at super-high speeds. Their defining characteristics are their wheels, which are located outside of the car's main body. This is in contrast to normal vehicles or stock cars, which have their wheels placed inside and under the main bodies.
Open wheel cars have a sleek, aerodynamic design, complete with aerofoil wings, and is built as light as possible for peak speed.
Formula one is usually considered the highest form of open wheel racing, if not all motor car racing. It's utilizes the latest and most advanced technology, with cars reaching speeds of up to 200 mph.
Formula one is contested over a series of races on specifically designed closed circuits. These races, known as Gran Prix's, are held all over the world spanning locations in Asia, Europe, and South America.
Every season, a driver's and constructor's World Championship is awarded to the driver and team that has accumulated the most points.
Other forms of open wheel racing include A1 Grand Prix and the Indy Racing Union.
- Touring and Stock Car Racing
Touring cars are production-derived cars that are modified for racing. Touring

car races are held in many different countries, with the V8 Supercar Championships Series and World Touring Car Championships being some of the most prestigious.
Cache cars are the American version of touring cars. Races are run on oval tracks, unlike touring cars which are held on closed off road courses. NASCAR, it's primary racing series is hugely renowned in the States. It's highlight races are the Brickyard 400 and the Daytona 500.
While not nearly as fast as Formula one, the similarities to common street cars, and the relative closeness between the cars, make stock and touring cars a firm fan favorite.
- Rallying
In Rallying, drivers will compete specially built rally cars or heavily modified production cars, through a series of set points. Drivers leave from these points at set intervals and the team who finishes with the fastest total time, wins.
Rallies are conducted on closed off roads and various other terrain. Rally courses can be made up of dirt, gravel, and other substances and races can be held in all sorts of conditions like rain or snow.
Rallying is unique in that it allows teams to gather information on the courses before the actual race. These "pacenotes" are used to guide drivers through the actual event.
Notable rallying competitions are the World Rallying Championships, which is the most immensely popular event and Rally Argentina.
-Drag Racing
Drag racing can be done with a variety of cars, and is conducted on a strait and plane track. Top flight dragsters have incredible acceleration, can reach top speeds of over to 300 mph, and require parachutes when decelerating.
Drag races are usually one-on-one, with the dragsters running next to each other. Tracks can vary in length, but is most commonly a quarter of a mile.
Whatever the format, is all about speed. Nothing can match the exhilaration that can generate. Toby Trumbill is a lifelong racing enthusiast, and amateur racer. He is the resident writer at http://motor-racing.com - You can reach Toby at toby@motor-racing.com
