Auto Racing Safety: Chasing for Glory without Tempting Danger

By Toby Trumbill
Admittedly, racing at the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is not the world's safest job. It's definitely not an occupation that would make insurance agents happy to see you! Nevertheless, people don't have the right to choose their calling. It's just something that you realize is in your blood and you can't get rid of. If racing is your passion, here are some tips to ensure that you live to see your dreams come true.

Tips on Auto Racing Safety Although NASCAR racers drive stock cars in a technical sense, the speed at which they're driving in makes typical safety equipment and devices insufficient. That's why extra precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of auto racers.

SEATS of NASCAR vehicles are required by the committee to be attached directly to the car's roll cage in order to minimize the chances of the driver getting thrown out of the vehicle. Car seats have three primary responsibilities when it comes to ensuring the driver's safety: keep the driver inside the vehicle's roll cage, prevent the driver from injuring himself severely, and minimize the impact of the collision through bending.

NASCAR drivers are also required to fasten their SEATBELTS when driving. While seatbelts may seem like a flimsy excuse for protection, they actually have the ability to give drivers more time to slow down or maneuver the car to safety. If you are still in a practicing phase and making car modifications by yourself, make sure that you replace seatbelts of your car with those that comply with NASCAR standards.

Besides the seatbelt,

there are other RESTRAINTS used to increase driver safety. Two straps are used to hold the shoulders to the seat, another pair of straps go around the driver's waist, while one last strap goes between the driver's legs. In recent years, NASCAR has commanded its racers to use head-and-neck-restraint in response to the string of tragic accidents that caused several popular racers to die.

WINDOWS must have netted nylon covers to help prevent driver's arms from accidentally slipping out of the car and getting injured during a crash. Remember that NASCAR racers travel at great speed. A collision at this rate would make them unable to have time or even the presence of mind to prevent their arms from getting bent at a wrong angle. Netted coverings will also prevent most debris from getting in and causing further injury to the driver.

It was in 1994 that ROOF FLAPS were first used in a NASCAR race. Roof flaps work by reducing the chances of vehicles from flying to the air and flipping out of the oval. When roof flaps are in use, a vehicle will usually only be able to spin once only before roof flaps exert sufficient pressure to force it to slow down.

Unlike typical WINDSHIELDS, those that are used on NASCAR racing vehicles are made of Lexan, a material that can be likewise seen on fighter planes and used in making bulletproof glass. An adhesive film is attached to a Lexan windshield to absorb most of the blows, scratches, and dents that frequently occur during races. A new film is used for every race.

Besides the safety options discussed here, there are still a lot of things to do before your vehicle can meet the standards of NASCAR. Don't tire of researching more because it's not only your future career but your life as well that's at stake!
