Gettng Involved with Auto Racing Organizations

By Toby Trumbill
You've been a big fan of for years and your enthusiasm hasn't waned down at all. If anything, the more you watch races around the world and rally for your favourite drivers and teams, the more interested and excited you are about the sport.

The only problem is, it can get pretty lonely, being a fan all by your lonesome. You desperately want to meet people who share the same interest. It would be even better to meet people who actually participate in the sport, whether in the professional or amateur tracks, as you yourself have plans of trying your luck on the tracks. You could really use the help of some experts on how to improve and trick out your ride.

Not to worry, because if you read on, you'll find a list of organizations that you will probably want to join.

Auto Racing Club of America

Formerly known as the Midwest Association for Race Cars, the ARCA was founded by John Marcum in 1953 and is currently an sanctioning body in the United States. Its competitors include professional racers, hobby racers, and some young drivers that are trying to make a name for themselves in the sport.

National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing

The NASCAR is the largest and one of the most popular sanctioning bodies for motorsports in North America. The NEXTEL Cup, the Busch Series, and the Craftsman Truck Series are three of the largest racing series that NASCAR sanctions. Its races are broadcast in over a hundred countries and is only second to the National Football

League in television ratings. NASCAR fans are also known to be the most brand-loyal fans in all of sports.

National Auto Sport Association

NASA promotes road racing and gives importance to high-performance driver education. It was founded in 1991 and currently hosts High Performance Driving Events, autorcross, automotive rallies, time trials, and club-level automotive racing.

Rally America

This organization sanctions rallying in the US. It was formed after the Sports Car Club of America dissociated itself from all stage rally activities, which were then turned over to Rally America.

United States Automobile Club

The USAC is a sanctioning body for open-wheel that has been in existence since the 1950s. Today the club has lost much of its influence, but remains to sanction some motor racing events at the grassroots level, such as the USAC Silver Crown.

Sports Car Club of America

The SCCA is both a sanctioning body and a club. It supports road racing and rallying in the United States. Formed in 1944, one of the SCCA's unique aspects is its programs for amateur and professional racers, such as the club racing and the Solo program.

Indy Racing League

The IRL is the sanctioning body for an open-wheeled racing series that began in 1994 by breakaway member of CART. The series originally raced solely on oval tracks but as of 2004 has also held road-racing events such as a street race in Florida and two road courses in New York and California.

Got an organization you're interested in? Most of the organizations on this list have their own websites, so you can visit their sites for more information. Otherwise, it's best to contact their main offices.
