Keep Your Race Car in Tip-Top Shape: Auto Racing Maintenance Tips
By Toby Trumbill Everybody knows you treat your race car like it was one of your children. And like your kids, you have big dreams for your race car, with the hope that one day you will be able to race it in the big leagues. For now, however, you and your car are busy burning rubber on the amateur motorsports tracks, grabbing a few wins and trophies in the process.
And like your real children, your race car requires utmost care and attention from you. You'll have to constantly watch over it and check for possible kinks and loose ends. For your race car to perform at its maximum potential and give you the chance to turn professional, you will have to spend as much time ripping the track as performing car maintenance.
Read on to get some maintenance tips.
1. The very first step to maintaining your car is to keep its exterior clean. Here are some ways on how you can do this:
How to Clean Glass
The old trick when it comes to cleaning glass consists of a mixture of vinegar and water that is wiped on the glass with a newspaper. While it might have worked for generations, because a lot of today's newspapers use water-based ink, this technique may not be very useful anymore.
These days it's better to use an ordinary household glass cleaner. You should start by partly rolling down your side windows and cleaning the top edges, next to the rubber gaskets. Because these parts are the dirtiest glass parts in a car,

it is best to clean them with a separate piece of cloth. It is also ideal to spray the glass cleaner on the cloth instead of directly on the glass to avoid the spray reaching the painted surfaces of your car.
When it comes to cleaning the rear window, the proper way to do so is by wiping the glass in a direction that is parallel to the defrost lines. If you do otherwise, you might run the risk of scratching and tearing the tinting film.
How to Clean Wheels and Tires
It is best to clean one wheel at a time, instead of keeping all wheels at the same stage of cleaning. Remember that wheel cleaners should not be left to dry on wheels. You should read through the instructions of your wheel cleaner carefully and determine the proper amount of time to keep the cleaner on the wheel.
2. Battery maintenance. If you want to keep your battery terminals in tip-top shape, keep them clean by using petroleum jelly. It melts easily, allowing it to get down to every nook and cranny of your battery.
3. Before you even dream of burning some rubber, make sure to check your car's engine. Check and replace bad hoses, wires, and belts, if needed.
As much as your race car needs constant care, maintenance and protection, you shouldn't risk your own safety to be able to do so. Always wear the proper protective gear, especially when checking your car's engine. Be sure that you are working with a cool engine and use eye protection when you do your tinkering. You might keep your car in tip-top shape, but without a driver who's also in good, physical condition, there isn't much of a chance of winning.
