Racing Legends Resources

Auto racing (also known as automobile racing or autosport) is a sport involving racing automobiles. Motor racing or motorsport may also mean motorcycle racing, and can include motorboat racing and air racing. It is one of the world's most popular spectator sports and perhaps the most thoroughly commercialized.

Below, you'll find leading Racing Legends articles and extensive information on products for the auto racing enthusiast and the amateur motor car racer as well!

The Legends of Auto Racing

By Toby Trumbill
Before you can shout "ka-chow" like Lightning McQueen of the animation picture Cars and win a trophy in NASCAR racing, it's important that you find a source of inspiration first. With a role model to look up to, you'll be able to have a definite goal to work for, standards to compare to, and sufficient motivation to help you cope with the challenges of your chosen field of interest.

If you can't think of any famous sportsman to serve as your idol, here are some suggestions:

Let's start with arguably the most famous of sportsmen: Dale Earnhardt Sr. Aptly nicknamed "The Intimidator", this deceased racer was born in April 29, 1951 and was known for his aggressive style of driving. Dale Earnhardt Sr. tied with Richard Petty for having the most number of all-time records in the entire NASCAR history. He has won a total of 67 races along with 7 championships. Earnhardt however died in an unfortunate tragedy when he crashed in the last lap of Daytona 500 in 2001.

Millions of fans mourning the death of this great motorist have, however, something to look forward to as Earnhardt's son, named Dale as well, attempts to blaze the trail with similar glory. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had, in fact, enjoyed a 42 point victory in his first race in 2000.

Equally well-known is second generation driver Richard Petty who was born in July 2, 1937 and son of another NASCAR champion Lee Petty. While nobody can deny the incomparable fame earned by Dale Earnhardt Senior, neither can anyone

refute the fact that Richard Petty truly deserves being called the best NASCAR driver of all time.

The year 1967 is very memorable in Richard Petty's career because it was in this year that he managed to win 10 races consecutively and 27 races in total! Richard Petty has also been honored with the Most Popular Driver award for a grand total of nine times. Richard Petty's family was similarly touched by tragedy. His grandson Adam Petty died on May 12, 2000 after having an accident at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Currently the darling of the press, Jeff Gordon had amassed an incredible number of victories and championships at such a young age. Gordon was the youngest driver to be granted a racing license by the USAC at age 16 in 1987. His first Winston Cup victory was in 1995, and he has never been displaced from the Top 10 since 1993. At present, he is driving a Chevrolet and with DuPont as sponsor.

Another famous racing sportsman worthy of praise is Greg Biffle of Vancouver Washington. Besides winning the Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award in 2002, he was also the first NASCAR driver to emerge victorious in both the Truck and Busch races. Upon entering the Cup Series in 2003, Greg Biffle was able to win Daytona's Pepsi 400.

Last but not the least is Jeff Burton who started his career through go-kart racing in his teenage years. In 1994, Jeff Burton was chosen as Rookie of the Year. At present, he has already won 21 NASCAR Weekly Races, 4 Bush Races, and 17 wins in the Winston Cup.

There is of course more famous racing legends to choose from if none that has been listed here appeals to you. Oh.and don't forget the female racers too, (Cheers Danica!)
